I just received my copy today. I almost cancelled it based on the two 2 star reviews that it had so far. I'm glad I went ahead and got it. The pages are the same quality as any other TOH cookbook. I don't know what the previous reviewer was thinking. The recipes especially all look wonderful. I was worried that I would recognize them all, but there were several that looked new to me. Also, recently TOH has had a few too many kale, fish, wacky supposedly healthy, weird stuff recipes for my taste, but these were all good. And the retro 90's photos of some recipes with the comments were funny and entertaining. I recommend buying this book. Excellent quality. Excellent recipes.

I order these books often. They usually come in a plastic shrink wrapping. This did not. The quality of the pages seems subpar as well. The pages feel thinner if that makes sense. I feel like I have to be more tender with them as I turn a page and I am used to Taste of Home cookbooks having quality pages. I would also like to mention that this book has NO TABS BETWEEN SECTIONS. This is very odd for a Taste Of Home book in this price range. It also makes recipe searches more time consuming and annoying. Will probably return. The recipe sections missing tabs is important to me. Not happy with the quality of the book.

When I ordered this I was worried that it would have too many of the same recipes I have. Taste Of Home is one of my favorite cook books. Anyway I was pleasantly surprised. Yes I have some of the recipes but there are also a lot of new ones. My one complaint is I wish they had tabs where they were sectioned off into different groups. But it's a great book anyway.

This cookbook is the best ever! Giant pictures and easy to follow directions, and lots of delicious recipe's.

I have to admit I wasn't too impressed with the recipes in the book. I've found a few that I like and tried Mom's Meatloaf last night. It was very good. I do like the spiral binding and the fact that I can lay it flat. And the photos are really nice. Just wish the recipes were more to my liking. Taste of Home cookbooks are generally very good.

I have no dislikes of this purchase-I am a FAN of Taste of Home, in fact! Their recipes have been real winners for me!

The pages are super thin and therefore hard to turn and they rip easily. Tabbed dividers would have been nice as one section is indistinguishable from another when you're in a hurry. TOH used to be a quality outfit until they sold to Rodale and they've been going downhill steadily since. Definitely my last purchase from them.

I was very disappointed in the shipping. There was only some bubble wrap in a part of the box allowing it to move about. The binder had a hole and a rip in it. As far as the recipes, you can never go wrong with Taste of Home.

Beautiful tribute from a mother to her son.....not sure why I chose such sad subject matter but I was drawn in by her moving prose and her intense love for her son. Spinney’s writing is so intimate that you feel like you’re in the room every step of her family’s journey.

This is the story of a young man who through the accident becomes severely brain damaged. His family is at the beginning optimistic and believes in his healing. But after some time the reality is that he is in a minimally conscious state (MCS). He cannot speak but the family soon realizes through his limited facial expressions, rare movements and moods that he is in terrible pain and that he doesn’t want to continue to live. But there is no legal way to end his suffering, so he is kept alive by modern medical care against his will. His mother writes: “Six hours on the cross seems infinitely more bearable.” The family even contemplates to buy the necessary fatal drugs over internet. Then after 5 years of suffering comes the relief, the young man dies naturally from respiratory infection.This is also a narrative about the medical staff, some are very engaged and supportive, some are cool and unprofessional.This book is beautifully written by very talented writer. It opens some very vital questions about us, humans and how are we able to react when another human being is in in a terrible distress.

There is a scene in which Miles prepares for this by purchasing a helmet. Miles lands hard on the ice, injuring his brain, and falls into a coma. He is 29-years-old, an entrepreneur and an athlete. That's how hospital staff refers to him as well.The first thing, he says, is that you must never reprimand him for doing that jump. It was a brave and wonderful thing to do. He is a young man and young men should all go out and grab life in the way he did.The family flies to Austria from England, Lu's husband Ron staying behind for a few days to give Miles's father a chance to be there without him.The beginning and the middle of the memoir remain hopeful as Miles is transferred to a different facility, he's brought out of his coma, he opens his eyes, he exhibits signs of understanding the world around him. Through it all, the reader observes how Lu keeps it together - it's even referenced at one point - and how palpable her grief is she waits for her son to return to her. I say grief because Miles is neither here nor there but rather in a vegetative state. She is mourning her son while trying to keep him with her as well.In this case we are talking about my son's life and as he is unable to speak for himself, I am his spokesman. Surely you understand it is my duty, my responsibility, to try to understand his situation?The end is certainly no less hopeful, but in a different way. Lu tries to do what she can to ensure her son dies with dignity. Lu is Miles's staunchest advocate and supporter, arranging and re-arranging parts of herself and relationships with others to ensure that Miles is receiving the best treatment and care possible in his minimally conscious state (MCS). This means he was one step above a persistently vegetative state. The legalities are different in the United Kingdom. Had he possessed PVS, the doctors would have been able to remove his suffering.I wish the memoir did a better job of indicating time markers, though in a way, it benefited the memoir since time is an abstract concept here. We flit between Miles's accident, his childhood, adulthood, and before you know it, five years has gone by since his accident. I also liked that Lu Spinney acknowledged her privilege through the memoir, about how she was able to pay for his treatment and other things. The end of the memoir is really what got me, after she has lost Miles and Ron as well, unfortunately. Two years into the accident, he passes away as a result of cancer.The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is mentioned throughout. I could see remnants of it in these pages. At one point, it's revealed that the author and her son read it together when he was 13-years-old.The memoir is a heartwrenching read, albeit very well-written and Lu's suffering as well as those around her is palpable to the reader.
