What a beautiful book. Of course that is what I would expect from Hengki Koentjoro. The man is a pro and a perfectionist. My gallery Tobin Ohashi Gallery has represented Hengki for several years and the most common question I get asked, is "does he have a book."Now he does. In fact, he has two and more in the works. I haven't seen the other books but I think it will be hard to top this one. I love the interior titles, the overall minimalist look, the high quality of the paper, the printing, the way it's organized and the works that are included in this book. This book is all underwater shots and many images of underwater wildlife, one of Hengki's specialties. The highly regarded photographer Michael Kenna, wrote one of the prefaces to this book, and he is also a Hengki fan. I was lucky enough to see an advance copy. Now that the book is out, I am really pleased that a larger audience can discover the genius and majesty of Hengki Koentjoro's works.

If you love black and white photography as much as I do (and you KNOW that you do), then you really should consider buying Hengki Koentjoro's new book of underwater sea photography, Monohydra. I have admired Hengki's work for years, and I am so pleased that a book of his underwater images has been published. This is a world that feels almost alien to a land lubber like me. I photograph the surface of the sea, but the world that lies below it remains, for me, ever mysterious, unusual and compelling. Hengki has a way of capturing its beauty that is dramatic and moving. I am a true believer that photography is meant to be enjoyed in print -- and this book features a series of flawlessly printed images filled with exquisite tones and contrasts. The prints capture everything that is wrong with sharing images online and everything that is right about letting ink saturate finely made paper. Hengki captures the light in such beautiful ways that it, quite frankly, makes me sigh-- and to experience that light as it shines through the water and illuminates the sea below feels almost sacred. I should add that no one asked me to share my enthusiasm for this book; this is not a thinly-veiled advertisement ... this all comes from my true appreciation for a craftsman of beautiful images

I have been an admirer of Hengki's photography for some time now. He is an accomplished black and white photographer by any measure but what impresses me the most about his images is his ability to master the light and produce a visual poetry that resonates in the mind of the viewer. His new photobook, “Monohydra”, is a defining testament to his ability to do just that. It is a book about underwater photography where every photo in his book offers a stillness and depth while unfolding a serene story of known and unknown worlds.There is a purity of purpose to Hengki’s photography that makes his images timeless and majestic. His enlightened vision, seemingly born from the ether of possibilities and nurtured in the imagination of his artistry, has allowed fellow photographers like me to truly appreciate the sophistication of simple moments. I bought the book as a Christmas present to myself as I have always wanted to see his work in person. Now I have something tangible to consider my own. For those of you who know my own work, you will know that the final decider for me is the printed photo. This book does not disappoint; it is enjoyable and moving with every turn of the page. About the Author

Dr. Kimiaki Tanaka (b. 1955) studied Indian philosophy and Sanskrit philology at the University of Tokyo and received his doctorate in 2008 for his dissertation entitled “Genesis and Development of the Mandala in India.” He also studied abroad as a visiting research fellow at the Nepal Research Centre in Kathmandu (1988–89) and held a Spalding Visiting Fellowship at the University of Oxford (Wolfson College) in 1993. He has taught at several universities in Japan, as well as conducted fieldwork in India, Nepal, and Tibet. From 1997 to 2015 he was academic consultant for the Hahn Cultural Foundation (Seoul), and he is also chief curator of the Toga Meditation Museum in Toyama prefecture, Japan, and vice-president of the Tibet Culture Centre International in Tokyo. He has published more than 50 books and 120 articles on esoteric Buddhism, Buddhist iconography, and Tibetan art. He is currently a lecturer at the Toho Gakuin, Keio University, and Toyo University.

This is a rather technical study of the mandala in Tantric Buddhism, and as such reads like the doctoral study it is. For an academic audience this is probably great, but for the general student of Buddhism or Eastern spirituality (and even more so for the general reader interested in mandalas as a universal symbol) it will probably be much less engaging. There are a lot of details here - yes, lots of images and descriptions of deities and mandalas, but also lots of charts, lists, and graphic schematic outlines of mandalas. This may all be either exciting or daunting depending on your interest level with the subject, but the first thing that came up for me was more mundane and practical; that this thick large format book (almost 11” square) would be better as hard-bound since it’s pretty floppy as a paperback.To give a taste of the specific tantric and academic focus of this book I quote the author from the introduction where he begins by defining what a mandala is; “Here, I define a mandala as an icon that represents the world view of Buddhism, or Buddhist cosmology and philosophy, by arranging Buddhist deities in accordance with a specific pattern.” (p. 2)Obviously this is NOT going to be a study of the mandala as a general symbol of the psyche (a la Carl Jung), nor as I would more generally define it, as a symbol of the ineffable nature of mind…. which apparently arose as spontaneous visions at some point in human history and were codified and systematized into elaborate conceptual models (a combination of signs and symbols) in tantric Buddhism.What it is instead is a very thorough look at a rather narrow slice of buddhist history; from the beginning of this form's use in the 5th century through its evolution in complexity to its culmination in the 11th century with the Kalachakra tantra when Buddhism in India died out. As well, the study covers how the mandala was represented and evolved in other countries where the tradition was established (Tibet, China and Japan).All this makes for a hard book to rate by stars. Personally it’s only a disappointing 3 to me (due to the specific and limited scope of the study), but perhaps it'll be a 5 for those with scholarly interest in the historical development of this particular application of the mandala motif; so I’ll give it a 4.
