I've never written a review for Amazon, so when I clicked on 5 stars and "I love it!" was the phrase, I thought PERFECT! This is an amazing book filled with delicious recipes, beautiful pictures for each elixir, and a wealth of background information to guide you on your journey to better health. Jessica Weston has spent years studying nutrition and food as medicine both at home and abroad. Reaching into this vast repertoire of knowledge and experiences, she has compiled the most outrageously delicious, but healthy tonics and juices for all of us to feast upon.So far my personal favorite is the "Golden Goddess" mango smoothie. I have arthritis, so I already had tried turmeric paste and coconut milk in some another recipe, but while healthy, they didn't engage my palate. It was a medicinal drink. Ugh! But Jessica's smoothie is fit for a goddess. It is as advertised: "yummy and full of anti-inflammatories at the same. . . . and easy to make once. Yes! My new "go to" health drink.Some of the recipes call for ingredients that I'm not familiar with. . . . I haven't explored the Mayan jungles yet. . . but Jessica Weston not only tells you about all the special herbs and spices, but which vendors sell these timeless remedies as well. Her glossary, sourcing and equipment sections at the back of the book provide invaluable information for beginning your journey to better health.I have not gotten into cleanses yet, but for those of you who do, there is a whole section on nourishing and raw cleanses: again with spectacular pictures to go along with each delectable recipe. Whether or not I do all that's suggested with a cleanse, I know I'll be trying the Chocolate Avocado Mousse and Baked Paleo Lasagna somewhere along my journey through this truly inspired book.I've had the pleasure of meeting Jessica Weston, and know that she passionately believes in everything she's written in this book. This is exactly what I was hoping for - plenty of recipes for various teas, hot/cold tonics, smoothies, and cleanses. I'm going to start with the switchel (ACV tonic) and elderberry elixir. I keep this on my counter for inspiration! Highly recommend if you're looking for something more advanced than basic smoothies but maybe aren't quite at Moon Juice level.

If anyone has ever been fortunate enough to enter the Wonderful Superfresh! Organic Café, they found an excellent spot to find delicious, nourishing, and guilt-free decadence full of love. This collection of potions, elixirs, recipes and information is a sliver of the magic that goes into the deliciousness of the Café, located in the main square of downtown Brattleboro, Vermont. Its highly recommended for all. I'm highly pleased that I took the money out of my wallet and purchased this book. You will be too.

I was expecting a book on the Unites States solely but was pleasantly surprised! The first half of the book goes into depth the creation and lure of trans Atlantic crossings and Gibbs himself. I had no idea Gibbs accomplished so much. You see his work all the time in documentaries but his name is rarely mentioned.The Author does a superb job with his writing and telling of history. He has a gift for writing and was enjoyable to read.The cruise ship industry will never be the same. Yes there are a few boutique cruises which attempt to change current trends, most are these bloated top heavy ugly ships catering to shopping and all you can eat and hitting these ports catering to 100% tourism for the 1 hour stop over.The SS United States represents the end of an era and the pride a country can have.Thank you Steven Ujifusa for writing this great book and preserving the legacy of Willie Gibbs and the SS United States. I hope in my lifetime I get to tour the ship before she is scrapped.

I have been a fan of S.S. United States ever since first seeing her docked on the west side of Manhattan in her prime, and more recently, as a rusting hulk on the Philadelphia waterfront. This was a magnificent vessel created by a man who wanted to create a technological icon to the country. At a time of international maritime rivalry to establish the fastest passenger liner across the Atlantic, the United States shattered all previous records, and has yet to be beaten by any large passenger ship. Her demise, as well as those of her competing magnificent vessels (such as Queen Mary), can be attributed to economics and jet aircraft. Queen May is a hotel/museum in Long Beach California; United States sits rusting at a Philadelphia wharf, uncertain of her future.The creator of this magnificent vessel was prominent American marine architect, William Francis Gibbs. The ship was a dream of his some thirty years before her completion. Gibbs was as much of a story as the ship itself and the author weaves an interesting story intertwining the two. The story of the man, and the planning, politics, construction and retirement of this ship is the subject of this well-researched book.It is as much a history of the times as it is a story of "A Man and His Ship". The title says it all, you can't address one without the other.

Anyone with doubts about America's future should read this book. It's not political tract, but an enthralling story about teamwork, ingenuity, persistence, and one of those quirky American individuals, William Francis Gibbs, who built the S.S. United States, the fastest and most beautiful ocean liner in the world. Along the way, Gibbs also designed and organized production of 70 percent of the U.S. naval ships in World War II. This is a true story and it happened not too long ago.William Francis Gibbs was an introverted boy from a newly rich Philadelphia family that lost most of its wealth in the first decade of the last century. Young Willy fell in love with ships at age eight when he stood on the banks of the Delaware River and saw the gleaming new steamship, St.Louis. He is a protagonist you admire and care about. Among his more endearing qualities is that he became a Harvard drop-out. Gibbs would lock himself in his room to study engineering drawings of ships, ignoring his coursework and not mingling with his rich, more social classmates.Throughout his life Gibbs remained an oddball, but became a central figure in the American achievement in the first half of the 20th century (his picture was on the cover of TIME in 1942). Ujifusa's book is worth reading simply for its portrait of that period. There are priceless vignettes. Gibbs and his brother, both in their late 20s, meeting with J.P. Morgan Jr. in his Wall Street office to show him their drawings and get money for the ships they wanted to build. A young army captain from Kansas, Dwight D. Eisenhower, sipping tea in a fancy New York apartment, lobbying the head of the U.S. shipping commission for space on a converted ocean liner in order to get his tank battalion over to the European front. Gibbs hauled before a Congressional committee during World War II, accused of war profiteering and, with complete vindication, getting the committee to back down.Ujifusa wonderfully captures not just Gibbs and his place in history, but the ship itself. He rightfully calls the S.S. United States a masterpiece, and describes in lucid, beautifully-written detail all that went into it. To this day, it stands as a tribute not just to the genius of Gibbs, but to American technology, organization and competitive will. Early in his career, Gibbs had come to believe in the superiority of the smaller, higher speed turbines developed by GE and Westinghouse. He had applied American mass-production techniques, including a wide range of off-site suppliers, to quickly and inexpensively churn out cargo ships in World War II. The S.S. United States could only have been produced in America. Ujifusa's account of the ship's maiden voyage in 1952, when it shattered the Queen Mary's trans-Atlantic record by 10 hours (in a three and a half day voyage), is one of the most thrilling in the annals of competition.As in the best of stories, A Man and His Ship is about more than inevitable triumph. There is the financial failure of Gibb's father. Going to sea has always involved risk, and often tragedy. Mr. Ujifusa's narrative includes the impact of the Titanic disaster, and he describes the horrific fire on the ocean liner Morro Castle off the New Jersey coast in 1934 that killed 136 people. Commerce and shipbuilding went into decline during the Great Depression. Gibbs had fierce battles with Washington throughout his career.He was a difficult personality. In the late 1990s I had the privilege--and pain--of working with Steve Jobs. In reading Ujifusa's portrait of William Francis Gibbs, I thought, "He's like Steve." Gibbs hired a talented team of New York designers for the elegant interior of the S.S. United States, but he insisted on okaying "every piece of furniture, bolt of drapery and square foot of carpet." He would go to the New Jersey Meadowlands with a tuning fork to make sure he had just the right pitch for the ship's whistles. Thank goodness America produces people like that and provides them freedom and resources to do great things.

I grew up in NY City at the end of the era of the great ocean liners. Whenever I drove down the West Side Highway I would search for the beautiful ships that docked there, most especially the "Big U," SS United States. The very first book I bought, in 1953, was about this ship. Ujifusa has created a memorable portrait of this phenomenal technological achievement, and of the enigmatic and driven man who designed and built her, William Francis Gibbs. It is at once historically accurate and emotionally compelling, a literary effeort to be proud of. Perhaps no one but a man like Gibbs could have built the greatest ocean liner of them all, and had he not lived, it never would have happened. The Big U is the apical achievment not only of the 1950's, but in terms of marine architecture, of all time. Nothing has surpassed her, and nothing ever will. That she is sitting at her moorings in Philadelphia today, rusting away, is not only a crime but an insult to the memory of her designer and the thousands of people who built her. Ujifusa has done a great service to America by writing the story in such a readable and entertaining, moving way.

Very well written, the book completely engaged me in its portrait of an unusually driven man from an era now gone. There is a certain lingering sadness to the tale, which chronicles the search for perfection in a system, and a culture, which was about to be swept away by new technology after only seventeen years of service. But the book is all about the excitement of that chase for perfection and in portraying that the book succeeds very well.

I've got very tangible result from my first evocation of Haniel ... or who am I kidding ... I should be honest and say that results are nothing less then mind blowing despite the fact that during the invocation, at some point I just sensed very vague change in the air, for which I was convinced that it was only a product of my imagination. So right now, almost a day later after performing the evocation, I'm witnessing some powerful manifestations of Haniel's magick. Thank you Damon Brand and of course thank you Haniel!

I've waited a while after getting this book before writing a review because I wanted experience the results and also to gain an understanding of this magick and how it differs from other books that the GOM has published. First off, this magick is unlike anything that the GOM has published before. These archangels don't just provide you with a simple result, although there are rituals in the book to tackle specific issues. What I'm trying to say is that when you ask these Archangels for help, they respond with the cavalry. They not only give you what you asked for in many cases, but they also give you insights into yourself and your life. I performed "The advanced calling" and I did so without even knowing what result to expect, as this ritual is not meant to tackle any specific problem. The results were indeed insightful regarding certain aspects of my past and my deepest and truest desires. I also received insights and input from the angels via impressions regarding questions I had about magick itself. There's just no way for me to give a description that will do justice to the way these Archangels affect you after rituals because the results are above my head. It's as though they work on such a grand scale that what they have to offer takes time to sink in and digest. It's no wonder that Damon Brand and Adam Blackthorne encourage a "deep reading" of the text in order to get a full understanding and benefit from this book. In closing, I want to say that this is by far the most "Spiritual" magick that the GOM has shared. The GOM has published books on how to attract money, success, love, sex, and for dealing with miscellaneous situations and problems and I've nothing against such magick. In fact, I love it. That said, for those of you who believe that magick should be all about spiritual growth, self actualization, and divine/intuitive insights, then this is definitely the book for you. Highly recommended.

In the days (perhaps week) before the release of the Archangel magick book, I could feel something BIG was coming.Each of the Gallery of Magick authors have brought something different and powerful to the table. From perspectives, to the deep, raw sense of encouragement emblazoned within their works, if you give their works a real shot with full focus, I seriously doubt a few years down the line you’ll be unhappy.If you’ve read other books from Damon Brand specifically, you get a presence that is highly practical, and yet encouraging like a wise teacher. You rarely get a glimpse of Damon, in terms of his own deep personal stance on life, he dropped a big surprise in this book. There were subtle hints strewn across his books specifically, but you’ll have to find out for yourself. It took the encouragement factor that much further (didn’t know it was possible..)This book is a masterpiece. And I say that compared to each of The Gallery of Magick publications. Words cannot describe what they have assisted with in my being able to reach for AND achieve.This book, it vibrates with a heavy authenticity, as their publications often do, Archangels of magick takes this a bit further. Comprehensive details and lists of powers give you something that is both out of and in the top levels of this world.A piece of advice I give to all those that I love, ‘hone your intuition’.If at first glance you don’t have all the answers, read again with focus.Get used to ‘reaching’ out for the answer if it feels brand new to you. Take your time and see if a general sense of knowing comes over you.Be patient, do the best you can, and it will all flow into place beautifully.I never would have imagined this level of access to such spiritual growth and physical attainment, despite all of the great libraries of occult research available. I've wanted to get this book for some time and finally ordered it recently. I knew the pictures were impressive from the few I had seen... the real book is better... so many photos of the abundant underwater live... the images of the ice along the top of the water, as seen from under the water looking up... so beautiful. Thank you, Mr. Wu, and the publishers, for this fine fine book!

A wild environment. A bit on the scientific side. but it is a very nice overview of the life under the ice in antarctica. Lovely and wild photographs. I have been enjoying it and reccomend it to anyone curious on the subject or just wanting to see something new.

A splendid book to browse or immerse in. The photos brings to life the icy vastness,surreal light the irony of the varied forms which call it home.

This is undoubtedly the most spectacular book ever written about the natural history of Antarctica. Wu's photographs are spectacular, and the text is a brilliant mix of scientifically accurate descriptions laced with thoughtful prose. If you're just looking for a picture book about Antarctica, this book will satisfy your every need. If you want to *learn* something about Antarctica, you'll treasure this book!

Dad joke isn't really popular in the country where I live in but I think it’s somehow related to this corny pickup lines wherein you don't have a choice once your friend started a corny question. I think its somehow related to a knock knock joke.I enjoyed every bit of it though, it’s funny and the illustration is beyond hilarious! I’m imagining a Tumblr meme’s faces LOL!!Every once in a while we need dad jokes to brighten up our day. Come on, admit it!I received an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book from author and the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest book review.

The description for this book of Dad jokes recommends to read it when you need to lighten the stress of the day with a groan. As soon as I saw that, I had to jump on this book. Today is Election Day in the United States and I am a tad bit anxious about the outcome. This light-hearted book had me groaning, snorting and guffawing at its’ lame dad jokes. The layout is simply a drawing of a dad giving the setup and then the punch line for a typical corny dad joke on each page. Highly recommended for when you feel sucker-punched by life and need a dad moment.Thanks to NetGalley, BooksGoSocial Publishing, and the author for an electronic review copy.

Written by Elias Hill and illustrated by Catherine Hogan, this book of puns hit on all the right cylinders – for me anyway. I might suggest that this may be the perfect reading material for the times when you're feeling a little brain-dead. How often is that? As an added incentive, these nonsensical one-liners may be the perfect solution to those times when authors are suffering from infamous writer's block - whatever works. I'll be buying this book for my husband. This is right up his alley! I enjoyed the simplicity of the book. Short enough to keep your attention and to be able to recall the jokes. I will check out the other Dad-Joke books as well. They would make good stocking stuffers.I voluntarily gave a review after being provided an Advanced Reader Copy from NetGalley.

This was an enjoyable book but I just didn’t find some of the jokes that funnyIt is well laid out and can definitely see it being a hit with some younger children. I did notice a couple of the jokes were repeated in the book though.3 stars from me for this one, love that cover though, very apt for the book!

My family enjoyed this book of Dad jokes on our road trip. I read through the book while we drove down the road and got some chuckles and some groans. This book is exactly what you would expect from a dad joke book! My favorite joke from the book...“What do you call a camel with no humps? - Humphrey!” Lol

As a lover of “dad” jokes, I found these to be great!I will be telling these to my dad and son, even though I’m a mom.A quick and funny read. A definite must have in an arsenal of jokes!

Sophisticates used to say they bought Playboy to read the articles and paid no attention to the pictures. I bought this book for the opposite reason: to look at the gorgeous pictures of libraries through the years — and they are gorgeous!However, I deigned to read a few words of the text, and discovered that it was fascinating and beautifully written, so I read it in detail. While it speaks about libraries, it also treats the various external factors that affected libraries, including their shifting patrons — the state, the church, the nobility, the plutocrats, the philanthropists, and the democrats. It also considers the effects of technology — the invention of books, paper, movable-type printing, gas lighting, electricity, and computing. Not to mention the evolution of architectural styles from classical to medieval, renaissance, baroque, rococo, neoclassical, Victorian, and modern. And, of course, the incorporation of the fine arts into library design.Although enjoyably readable, the book also includes all the scholarly apparatus necessary for a true student of libraries. Any lover of books, libraries, or beautiful buildings will delight in this volume.

I essentially read this in one sitting (about 14 hours). Initially when I flipped through it, I was slightly disappointed the focus was so heavy on the buildings--but when I got to reading it, I learned quite about about the relationship of the buildings and some of the challenges of preserving books. There's a lot more here than just architecture and there's a lot of great architecture. I learned a lot--this book filled numerous holes of my knowledge and uncovered many new areas to explore. The end notes and bibliography are wonderful as well; enough context to pick and choose next steps, warnings on outdated materials, etc.This book covers libraries in Europe, North America, Asia, and some notes about the Incas, Aztecs and Mayans. I don't recall seeing much (anything?) about modern South America or Australia as I write this review.Anyway, it's a beautiful book. If you're reading these reviews, you should get the book.

As usual, this Thames & Hudson book is a wonderful coffee table book. It is also an indispensable resource book for any bibliophile. The photographs by Will Pryce are works or art and had there been no text the book would still be a wonderful five-star book, but the text concerning the history of libraries is an informative addition and makes this the best of the three big books on libraries of the world. Chapter one takes us to the libraries of the ancient world. Sadly, the library of Pergamum, described as ‘second only to the Library of Alexandria’ has better coverage than the Library of Alexandria itself, but that is because there is virtually no historical material other than hearsay evidence of its existence. The book goes on to cover the libraries of the middle ages with the author taking us to the cloisters, codices, and chests of those libraries. Chapter 3 concerns the libraries of the 16th century where books are first found chained to the selves. The rest of the book takes us in successive chapters to libraries in the 17th century until we see the beginnings of the modern libraries in chapters 6 and 7, that is, from the gaslit libraries to libraries of electricity, concrete and steel. The last chapter, chapter 8 takes us right into the future with amazing libraries such as the Liyuan Library in China, made of wood, and the Grim Centre in Berlin. Two contrasting models of the imaginative creations that indicate to us that in spite of digital books, libraries are still relevant and important. The other two big books on libraries are the 2005 edition, ‘Libraries’, a magnificent book of delightful photographs by Candida Hoffer and a charming essay by Umberto Eco. The third is ‘Libraries’ by an unnamed team of Roads Publishing. This is the thinnest volume and focuses on modern libraries. The Thames & Hudson volume is by far the most expensive, but if you are getting only one, that should be the one.

Yes, this is a coffee table book, and probably appeals mostly to bibliophiles (and perhaps architecture students). As such, bibliophiles can simply flip through the pages and appreciate the lovely photos. But if the size and weight aren't off-putting (it's perhaps best read at a desk or, if one has one, medieval angled lectern), it has a wealth of information on the development of the form and function of libraries through the ages, showing how the need to protect and preserve books, the desire to present them both for use and for appreciation as cultural objects, and the changes brought by varying tastes and the development of technology changed the appearance of libraries. Particularly gratifying, especially in a book of this size and scope (from ancient Mesopotamia to the new millenium, and spanning the globe), is how the photos match the subject discussed on that page. Such care for the reader is the mark of a thoughtful editor (which one expects from the U. of Chicago Press), and it makes the reading more enjoyable.

This was required for my Library Research Skills class at Montana State University, and is a really useful resource. Badke's writing is concise, non-trite, and his suggestions are intuitively applicable. He also includes some welcome wit to a sometimes dry subject. New editions are updated to include recent changes to everything research and web-oriented. Great book!!!

When you have to read 15 books in four months on the topics of research, thinking, and writing, you are very grateful to begin with an author who is both concise and humorous. I'm pleasantly surprised by this book, and it achieves exactly what this author intends -- prepares me to dive into my doctoral research program without making me want to run away and hide. Thank you, William Badke!

Excellent book that explains how to do academic research, prepare for writing a paper (if you have read enough that you can explain your topic for 1-minute to someone else, then you are ready to write your paper!), and all of the new databases that are available to use to find vetted articles. Mr. Badke writes in an easy-going manner, as a librarian and instructor. He also helps people through their anxiety with excellent pointers and insight.

William Badke has written an excellent and extremely useful reference book on how to start research projects. As he aptly describes, getting started is probably the most difficult part of a research project; especially for those of us who are new to the art of researching.The book is well written and referenced, with the author writing with a sense of humour and this also makes the book appealing since it could otherwise be a dry, boring book without the author's humour creeping into the pages.While the new-to-the-art-of-researching student will find this book very interesting and helpful; many experienced researchers will find the book helpful also. The author describes how to use various resources, such as internet, periodicals and catalogues to assist the researcher realise his/her project goals.In summary, a very well written and laid out book by a person very experienced in the the field of research. Definitely recommended for the novice researcher, however would also be useful for the advanced researcher. Well done, William Badke!

We live in the "information age". Communication on the information highway is fast pace. However, the problem is most of us don't have the map needed to travel that highway and so we have great challenges finding the destination. The material in Dr. Badke's book is the road map to the information highway. This book is the "GPS" to the information highway.If readers follow this guide, they should be able to access the information needed much quicker and easier. It will save students valuable time as they learn research skills and strategies needed (needed for college and universities assignments). It will also make the research more accurate, as the student learns how to access information written by the best scholars in the field. A small price to pay for a resource is worth so much.The author writes in an easy to read style. Hint: to get the most benefit out of this resource, take the time to do the practice exercises before getting involved in your actual research. If you do this, it should take you less time to do the actual research for your assignments. Try it. It works.

This book serves as a useful introduction to research techniques and options for the late high school or early-to-mid-level college student beginning research. Badke's writing focuses on finding sources and writing research papers. The writing assumes no current knowledge of conducting research of any kind, so parts may be simplistic for many, but there is a wealth of great research strategies within.He begins with a look at paper design, and the place from which to begin your research. He then moves to database, periodical and internet searches. He then discusses how to formulate your research into a working topic, and organizing your data.He writes for people who have never really used a library effectively or used a computer for research. Overall, this is a superb introduction to research that should be read by anyone attempting research.

I gave this edition a full five stars for reasons too innumerable. However, the major reasons focus on backsliding or becoming too comfortable with one's procedures and knowledge. In the present age of false news and sleazy politicians, we need reminders of good form and proper research techniques.

I teach information literacy to students at a community college. I've been using this book as my class text for a few semesters. I like it very much, especially Badke's writing style. I think it is an esential text for anyone interested in accessing information that counts!

Practical reading and straight to the point. Is not as interesting as rebuilt in that it doesn't read as well as a story. Very good and challenging points though. I gave it to my youth group volunteers for us to discuss.

Like the other Rebuilt books, simple yet much needed concepts to take to Catholic parish ministry. It's going to be messy, but everything that's worth doing is worth the challenge. This is required reading for parishes that don't know why their youth ministry program never seems to get anywhere.

This book was recommended to me by my pastor. I found the information to be extremely realistic, helpful, and encouraging to someone who is new into Youth Ministry. I would recommend this book to all who are involved with the youth at their parish or diocese.

I have read the other "Rebuilt " books and this one is a very good follow up of the implementation for a new approach with youth ministry.

A great book especially if you are new to Youth Ministry! Easy read and very enjoyable.

If you are involved in youth Ministry or even just have a kid that attends, you need this book and buy one for everyone in your parish too.

Awesome book. Worth every.penny.

We used these for stocking stuffers this year, and they were very well received. Our two children love to read about mummies, gods and Pharaohs, and this was perfect for them. For those of you who are not familiar with the Fandex Family Field Guides, these are basically flash cards with cool pictures and facts about various subjects: butterflies, buildings, mummies, etc. These are great for kids who are traveling, for snow days or for rainy days when your children need a little extra something to keep their attention. I also love that the kids are able to talk about what they've read, which makes for a more enriching conversation around the dinner table. :) Shipping was of course fast and easy, and we love the product. It's just what I was looking for...it gets the information out to you faster and easy to follow. I would highly recommend it for any age.

I bought these for my classroom and our study of ancient civilizations. A very popular item for my students. Always being read.

The item was a holiday gift and when I found out I was not going to get it until after the holiday I contacted thesender and asked if i can have it sent early. No problem got it within the week of my request and counld notbe happier over all. Looks like new

These are like THE BEST flash cards of mummies, gods, goddesses, the Valley of the Kings and pharaohs! The pictures are absolutely gorgeous! Each "page" is filled with fascinating information about spells, incantations, The Book of the Dead, secrets of embalming and passwords. Do you know the only vital organ to be left in the preserved body? Very interesting! It doesn't get very in-depth because there just isn't room, but this would definitely help a child with a grade school/middle school test…or a grown up on trivia night! I definitely recommend it.
