I've read many books on atheism and this book was much better than expected. Very understandable and includes many arguments and ideas that I'd never heard before. I figured it would be pretty much like other books on the topic but I was pleasantly surprised. It focuses on evolution/intelligent design but covers a fairly wide range of topics, from hell to pornography.

Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism by David Mills"Atheist Universe" is the excellent book that uses sound logic and concise language to methodically counter well-known Christian arguments and positions. Among the arguments he counters include creationism and Intelligent Design. David Mills has written a very sound thought-provoking book that is a lot of fun to read. This 272-page book is composed of the following eleven chapters: 1. Interview with an Atheist, 2. Origin of the Universe: Natural or Supernatural?, 3. God of the Gaps: Does the Universe Show Evidence of Design?, 4. The "Miracle" of Planetary Clockwork, 5. The "Miracle" of Life on Earth, 6. Can Genesis Be Reconciled with Modern Science?, 7. "Miracles" of Christian Perception, 8. The Myth of Hell, 9. Christian Fundamentalists and the "Danger" of Internet P*rn, 10. Was America Really Founded upon Christian Principles?, and 11. "Intelligent Design": Christianity's Newest Cult.Positives:1. A well-written, well-researched book that is characterized by its pleasant tone and conversational prose.2. Fascinating topic that covers many interesting areas.3. Great use of sound science and logic that is accessible to the masses.4. A very quotable book. Great quotes throughout.5. A great introduction in which the author preps the readers on the contents of the book.6. An interview that cleverly provides a good overview of atheist philosophy. A lot of good insight into why the author doesn't believe in gods.7. A look at the First Cause argument and a thorough debunking of it.8. Creationism...its views, its flaws. Creationist's beliefs versus scientific facts.9. Creationism versus Evolution...here we go again. The author does a wonderful job of establishing creationist misunderstandings. Also responds to creationist objections to evolution.10. Rock-solid evidence for evolution, the geologic column. Excellent explanation for the layperson and a thorough debunking of creationism.11. The book of Genesis gets debunked. One of the most comprehensive debunking of Noah's Ark in just a few pages. Debunks the notion of a "young" Earth.12. A very helpful section on biblical absurdities.13. "Miracles" under the microscope.14. A great rebuttal on the alleged existence of Hell. "The unavoidable conclusion is that the `reason' for Hell's torture is simply to torture, as a purposeless, vengeful end in itself".15. A very interesting look at why internet censorship is unnecessary and counterproductive. One of the most amusing government commissions ever formed let me not ruin it here.16. Debunking the notion that America was founded on Christian principles.17. A look at the cult better known as the Intelligent Design (ID) movement. It's history and how it "evolved".18. Debunking the Anthropic Principle and other ID follies.19. Debunking the Kalam argument.20. Excellent notes section and bibliography.Negatives:1. The definition of agnostic was not accurate.2. Not all atheists are liberals. I agree that the majority is but I would be careful of lumping everyone under the same umbrella.3. Despite the pleasant overall tone there is some ranting going on...In summary, I really had a lot of fun with this book. Good use of logic is so refreshing. This book really holds up well after a second read. The author's conversational tone and his command of the topic made this is a treat to read. Many topics within the atheist philosophy is covered while methodically dismantling creationism and Intelligent Design. This book is perfect for anyone interested in the atheist/agnostic philosophy. I highly recommend it!Further recommendations: "The Religion Virus: Why We Believe in God: An Evolutionist Explains Religion's Incredible Hold on Humanity" by James A. Craig, "50 Reasons People Give for Believing in a God" by Guy P. Harrison, "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins, "The God Virus: How religion infects our lives and culture" by Darrel W. Ray, "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason" by Sam Harris, "Faith No More: Why People Reject Religion" by Phil Zuckerman, "Atheism Advanced: Further Thoughts of a Freethinker" by David Eller, "Why We Believe in God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith" by J. Anderson Thomson Jr., "The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies---How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths" by Michael Shermer, and "Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity" John W. Loftus.

For this book to be as cheap in price I didn't expect too much but it is packed with so many things for a broad audience. The only downside is that someone that didn't have much of an education in science may have problems understanding some of it. There is however something for everyone in this book. I didn't think of it as "Ammo" to use against the 'believers', I appreciated it for something that I actually enjoyed reading for once. I think it is nothing short of brilliant and the research that went into this book had to be time consuming.I am neither a cosmologist nor a nuclear physicist and would have had problems understanding the book if that's who it was intended for but luckily this book was written for someone just like me. There are terms that I had forgotten such as thermodynamics, entropy as well as laws such as conservation of mass / energy, etc. It was nice to be refreshed and it did it so quickly. I can only speak of a few paragraphs where my concentration wavered, the rest of it held my attention pretty well. One thing that gave me cognitive dissonance was the sexual latency in prepubescent children (I did not know Freud agreed with this). I dont remember this in my psych classes. To say that children who have not entered puberty are not interested in looking at certain things on the internet is hard for me to believe.

I am very impressed with this book. It provides an amazing amount of information with plenty of scientific evidence to back it up. I know this book is great based on the amount of highlighting and book marking I did while reading.

I'm not even an atheist--I consider myself agnostic-- but Mills does an excellent job pointing out the logical fallacy in the Christian Fundamentalist argument for God.He cites many quotations from several known American figures(scientists, politicians, writers, presidents). He provides many Creationist arguments and responses to several of the most popular topics concerning the Bible. He provides many references from which one can further research. If you're already an Atheist, get it.If you're open-minded, get it.If you're dubious about Christianity, get it.Even if you've been taught and coerced into believing Christianity is "the one true religion", get it.After reading it, even if a God does exist, it most definitely is not the Christian one.

I really have enjoyed this book so far, I have not totally completed it, but I just would like to say that this book has really helped to pull all the information together that I have been reading lately and now I feel I have a pretty good understanding of the Big Bang and evolution, among other things and this book has definitely resolved some misunderstandings that I have held just because I simply did not know. Not only that, it is very entertaining and keeps you wanting to read. The other thing I found it that I did not understand some of the Creationist beliefs on some of this information so I have a better understanding of what they mean on certain subjects, therefore it will make it easier for me to be able to debate and defend with knowing what their thoughts entail. I definitely would recommend this book for others that would like a better understanding of the universe and evolution realities.

In October 1984, a Piper Navajo Chieftain commuter flight, loaded to the gunwales with nine passengers and too much baggage plus one young and thoroughly in-over-his-head pilot, crashed onto a snowy mountain slope in northern Canada. Six of the passengers died, some slowly and in agony. Three, plus the pilot, survived and spent a bitter-cold night and part of the next day in their street clothes, without shelter, before being saved by a substantial search-and-rescue operation mounted by the RCAF, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and civilian pilots and snowmobilers. All four kept their wits about them despite having injuries ranging from banged up to severe. It was an odd quartet. One was an important Canadian politician. Another was the pilot, who knew he had screwed up badly by trying to make a solo night instrument approach to an airport that was below minimums and had an ADF beacon as its sole navaid. And the other two were a Mountie and a tough young ex-con he'd been escorting to court. The prisoner was the strongest, bravest and most resourceful of them all. Without him, some might have died. The author, Carol Shaben, had unusual access to the four. Her father was the pol, and she has used that happenstance to tell a survival story in a manner and with a style that the deservedly lauded Jon Krakauer would appreciate. As somebody who has both piloted Piper Navajo Chieftains and flown in the Canadian north country, I also find it remarkable that Shaben, a nonpilot, has gotten every aviation detail right. There are “aviation experts” writing and reporting for major media outlets who couldn't do half as well as Shaben does. The book in fact is about long-term survival far beyond a cold night in the bush. There are the struggles of an overworked young pilot trying to build hours so he can get a real airline job, as well as the marginal existence of the tiny, family-run commuterline that hires him. The crash bonds the four survivors, who become friends thereafter--particularly the Mountie and his former prisoner. Each handles the crash experience in a different way, and their lives are thereafter shaped by it. Shaben follows them all through their emotional and physical struggles. She tells a fascinating story of lives that were changed forever by a dreadful night that the rest of us can barely imagine.

I've enjoyed the book, but truly expected it to be more of a page turner. I opened it, expecting the fast pace of survival in the wilderness. I'm an avid outdoors (wo)man, and I'm fully aware the risk of the mountains at night. The details of emotions are scarce, and I know the emotion of being lost in a wilderness about to freeze to death. The book tells a nice story, and good insider details of the plane crash, but, alas, moves too slowly and spares plenty of detail in the telling of its story. What about the fear of the elements? The icy conditions? The probability of animals nearby? At one point, Erik and Paul are working under the plane, and out of nowhere comes the accusation that Paul has been stealing from the luggage and the deceased. It has been shown earlier in the book, where he uses clothes of the deceased to clothe those clinging to life, but I fail to see its relation to the rest of the story. Why was this important? Of course it mattered, because otherwise the four clinging to life were likely to have frozen to death, but the accusation of petty theft? Not what I expected. I like the side by side comparison as time marched on. I enjoyed some of the smaller details that may have otherwise been overlooked, but Ms. Shaben's father is the center of her focus. The others had to be thinking of their own lives. Again, detail in this section is sketchy.Oh, and the first section of the book is incredibly dull, and all about Erik's flight experience, not in reference to the remainder of the book, or so I felt. It's alright. I'd recommend you get it from a library or a friend, though, if you so desire. There are better stories out there.

This book touched me very deeply. Carol Shaben's experience as a reporter, coupled with her excellent skills as a storyteller, gave birth to an extraordinary book. Not only did she relate the very real experiences of the survivors of a small plane crash in the wilds of Canada, she also gave me a detailed look into their lives both before and after the crash. This book was very real for me because of her great involvement in the story, her desire to know the truth, and her deep care for the characters about whom she wrote.I stayed involved with the book because it showed me not only the experiences of the main characters but also the lives of many of the minor characters on the night of the crash.Because of the care and compassion with which the story was related, it evoked my care and compassion. I so wanted Paul to pull the rabbit out of the hat for himself, and I appreciated each person's struggles and triumphs because they were and are real people who were greatly affected by being in a plane crash.Thank you so much, Carol, for sharing this with me.God's Blessings to you.

This book describes the crash of a commuter flight in northern Canada - the events leading up to it, the struggle of the survivors to avoid freezing to death before rescue, the organization and activities of the rescuers, and finally how the crash affected the subsequent lives of the survivors. One is kept in suspense about how the rescue will proceed, in spite of the bad weather and the injuries resulting form the crash. The subsequent lives of some of the survivors were in some cases changed profoundly but in other cases reverted to their previous patterns. The author, herself the daughter on one of the survivors, did a great job of telling the story and showing how, although we usually hear that some people may have survived a terrible event, we usually hear nothing about how the event may have changed their lives.

#115,966 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I got this book about 3-4 months ago and have made several of the recipes, they are good and there is a good variety of recipes. Breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, soups, desserts. Most of the recipes call for ingredients I have most of the time. The recipes list both the macronutrients and the calories, fats, carbs, fiber and proteins The best thing is I can make a recipe the night before or in the morning and have it ready to eat in the evening. I don't consider Keto cooking a diet, but a lifestyle. Since I started following it I am off of most of my prescription drugs and doing very well.

I can’t believe I’ve only had this book for 3 weeks. We absolutely love the recipes. I’ve made 7-8 recipes so far and all have been easy and delicious!! I’m thoroughly impressed. I’d highly recommend this cookbook for anyone doing keto. Crockpot cooking is also very convenient for hectic schedules like mine. This book is perfect! This review is 100% genuine. I was not gifted a book in exchange for my review or anything like it.

I gave 4 starts because their isn't any pics with the recipes and I'm a visual person but recipes are good and tasty and easy to follow.

Best tip in this book - use jarred pesto on a crock pot roast. Easy, delicious Keto. No other ingredients needed.I wish this book had pictures, here’s an example. I made the Fiery Beef Curry, which was delicious & very keto. But the sauce was very thin & I was expecting something thicker. I think I followed the recipe properly, a pic would help.Overall, I would recommend.

Easy Ketogenic Diet Slow Cooking is a gem. Each recipe contains a high, medium or low keto quotient button, also labeled as to Dairy, Nut, and Allergen Free and Paleo-Friendly and Quick Prep. I love when a cookbook has these noted, saves time and makes finding inspiration faster (for slow cooking). The nutritional calculations are also provided here.I made the Buttery Coconut Bread this morning and was thrilled with the mix of flours and texture of this slow cooker bread! The Asian Pork Spare Ribs were a hit last night. The Condiments, Sauces & Broths Chapter offers a Ghee recipe and an awesome Spinach-Cheese Spread.I have a few slow cookers and not many go-to recipes but I think this book will solve that now.Too many slow cooker recipes call for dumping a can of this or a jar of that into the pot and just having an over sauced unhealthy dish resulting from this. Cant wait to try the Coconut-Chicken Curry recipe and the Hungarian Chicken.Besides people using the Keto diet for weight loss this cookbook looks to be a very good guide for good and tasty slow cooking for everyone! Here's to using some of my slow cookers, finally! The publisher sent me this book without charge.

Great Keto slow cooker cookbook! Delicious recipes, truly keto with nutrients listed. Some recipes require precooking onions, garlic etc but I just throw them in and it comes out great. Highly recommend!

The recipes I have tried have all been very tasty. The macronutrients are listed. The recipes are easy, an important thing because eating keto isn't easy. The whole family likes the recipes so I don't have to prepare a separate meal for myself all the time. I already have 'standby" dishes that I can shop for without thinking about it.

The Easy Ketogenic Diet Slow Cooking book is good for several groups of folks, including not only those on a ketogenic diet of healthy fats, protein and whole foods, but paleo dieters as well, as many recipes have easy suggestions to modify ingredients for that diet. Slow cooking fans and those who appreciate easy, delicious recipes also will enjoy this guide. It is a complete guide, starting with selecting the right slow cooker for yourself. Good ideas are scattered throughout, such as grease the slow cooker insert before using each time (I used spray olive oil and was amazed at what a difference that made for cleanup!) Cutting ingredients into the same size is suggested, at least for the large ingredients. I also liked the food safety cautions and cooking time equivalents. The dirty dozen and clean fifteen gave me some pause, as it lists the foods scientists found to be high in pesticide contamination, as well as those that measured with negligible amounts of pesticide residue.Recipes are grouped into dairy, nut and allergen free, Paleo friendly and quick prep. Chapters organize recipes for breakfasts, , soups, vegetables, poultry, pork and lamb, beef, desserts (yes!) and sauces. In the latter, you can find out how to make your own ketchup and one of my favorites, beef bone broth. I plan to try both of those and others soon. The first recipe I tried was Creamy Lemon Chicken (p. 84), which you can modify for the Paleo diet. It was, as the book title suggested, EASY. In fact, the only hard part was smelling the magnificent scents as it cooked and waiting for the dish to be finished. OK, I admit it. I reduced the cooking time by using the high setting on the slow cooker, cutting the time in about half. The result was not only fragrant, it was very flavorful. I found the sauce quite thin, but absolutely delicious. I was given an examination copy of this book from the publisher, but this review reflects my true feelings and experiences with the book.

Could a book be more relevant for today? Well, surely God's Word is--but Machen's book written nearly a hundred years ago seems pre-molded for modern America 2015. We live in the age of Creflo Dollar's gospel, Bart Ehrman's textual criticism, Rob Bell's universalism, Joel Osteen's preaching, and Oprah Winfrey's theology. If the circumstances surrounding Dr. Machen's early 20th century world were bad--what has it come to today?!There indeed is nothing new under the sun. The battles that were wrestled in the past are the same battles we are fighting today (though perhaps under different names). Machen iterates, "The greatest menace to the Christian Church today comes not from the enemies outside, but from the enemies within; it comes from the presence within the church of a type of faith and practice that is anti-Christian to the core." It is therefore that menace to the precious church of Jesus Christ that Machen fights against with all righteous tenacity of a shepherd whose flock is under siege by wolves.Machen reveals that "Liberal Christianity" is not Christianity at all. He goes as far as to say that liberalism is no "mere hersey" as it proceeds from a "totally different root". Liberal Christianity, as Machen defines in the opening, is a false gospel. It has a different view of God, a far more positive view of man, a different view of Jesus Christ, and therefore a far different view of salvation. Jesus under the liberal teaching is no longer the "object of our faith" but a faithful example to us of ethics, morals, and love for all. Man needs only follow his example alone and all will be well! To that Machen says--FALSE RELIGION. If Jesus did not live, die, and rise from the dead in historical time and space we have nothing. A gospel without the supernatural, Machen concedes, may be easier to believe--but it would not be worth believing! We are in desperate need of deliverance from our sin, and only the blood of Jesus can satisfy that need.Machen also includes a brief and incredibly strong defense of the authenticity of Paul's letters as well as the unity of the Scriptures as a whole. "Christianity and Liberalism" is an excellent defense for the Truth of the Gospel as expressed throughout Scripture and could not be more relevant for today. I marked down one star because the font was scanned directly from the hard copy--and not the Amazon "Bookerly" font I prefer for the Kindle. Some words were impossible to read as some letters were distorted. All in all 5 stars for Machen. 3 for Kindle edition (99 cent purchase keeps it from going any lower).

The quality of the text is abysmal, it hurts my eyes. The quality and content of the writing is extraordinary, but the text itself is smeared and muddy. This book is available in the public domain. Don't buy it from Amazon, much better copies are available for free download. That being said, by all means read the book! It's amazing that Menchen can perfectly describe modern liberalism as far back as 1923, before the sexual revolution of the Sixties, which seemed to me the object of liberal worship today. Liberal Christianity is anti-Christian, as Menchen so ably demonstrates in this book.

As I read this book, J. Gresham Machen reminds me of many things, all characteristic of Old Protestantism, and even overtones of classic Puritanism. His writes with the passion of Whitefield, his words have a fire like Wesley, and he possesses both the clarity and contrarianism of Calvin. He's a conservative Presbyterian who preaches like a revivalistic Pentecostal. Simply put, we need more men like Machen in today's church. I don't know about you, but folks, we need Christ, and Christ crucified. Not the Jesus of our imagination, but the Jesus of the blood-soaked Scriptures. In this book, Machen brings his spiritual hammer (the Word of God), and battles the false philosophies of this world (2 Cor. 10:5-6). He unsheathes his sword, and wields it against a false religion, a pretender that cloaks itself in Christian language - "Liberalism". This religion is a marriage of naturalism, humanism, secularism, and sentimentalism all rolled into one. It's anything but Christian. The voices of Old Liberalism (F. Schleiermacher, A. Ritschl, W. Bousset) that Machen is doing serious war with here, are in so many "conservative" denominations and churches today it's shameful. Every "elementary" Christian issue he speaks about - Christ, the Bible, Sin, Salvation, the Church, God & Man - is so diluted or discarded in today's American "church" that most of us are in a Hebrews 5:11-14 situation at best, and a 2 Tim. 4:1-4 situation at worst. Both our recent and present generations are products of the continued fight for the basic truths of the Bible. Both grandparents and parents who have grown up in the church have not endured sound doctrine, and preachers have not "kept the faith". It's passed on to the "Now" generation of church youth, who believe in an imaginary Jesus, and live in a virtual world.Machen speaks against this false religion in devastating fashion. He speaks matter-of-factly and with biblical exactitude. His writing is not for the weak-stomached Christian. Those who are used to pastoral jokes, cute stories about Easter, and fun vacations at your small group - you probably need a "Diet" or "Baby Machen" version of this book. He'll punch you in the mouth if you're not careful. I'm serious. Even for the weathered Christian, the person steeped in the Puritans, the Old Presbyterians, the serious Pentecostals, the student of Edwards, the lover of Lloyd-Jones, this is honestly a spiritually exhausting book to read. You're basically reading all-out theological/spiritual warfare. You've been translated into another reality of the spiritual battle raging which didn't end with the Fundamentals, with Machen, with the Chicago Statement, etc., but will rage and continue to rage. It's a battle between true and false religion. Between a Jesus who is a teacher and a Jesus who is the Savior.Machen, in a concise 153 pages, opens up the biblical canons and fires everything the Word of God has against this false religion. In my estimation it's a book every Christian must read and arm themselves with. There is a profound and substantive difference between true and false religion - Jesus.
