Amazon.com Review

Get ready to give up that morning latte and kiss cola goodbye. Here comes Caffeine Blues, by Stephen Cherniske, M.S., the first book to expose the dark side of America's No. 1 drug: caffeine. If you are one of the nearly 80 percent of Americans hooked on caffeine--a natural component of coffee, tea, and chocolate and a common ingredient in drugs, soda, candy, and other products--this book will be a wake-up call. In Caffeine Blues, Cherniske, a nutritional biochemist with more than 25 years of academic research and clinical experience and author of the bestseller The DHEA Breakthrough, reveals the truth about caffeine and explains how to kick the habit forever. Cherniske discusses how caffeine affects the body and brain and why it can increase your risk of dozens of health disorders ranging from osteoporosis, diabetes, and PMS to hypertension and heartburn. After spending 300 pages documenting all of caffeine's evils, Cherniske finally offers a decaffeinated life line: "Off the Bean and on to Vitality," a step-by-step, clinically proven program to help readers kick the habit and boost energy levels naturally. --Ellen Albertson

From Library Journal

Nutritional biochemist Cherniske claims that people who consume more than 300 milligrams of caffeine per day are victims of caffeinism: a state of chronic toxicity resulting from excess caffeine consumption and a major contributing factor to heart disease, hypertension, stomach ailments, diabetes, and sleep disorders. Cherniske also warns that most coffee beans are contaminated by pesticides, which harm not only drinkers but also exposed agricultural workers. For conservationists, he highlights the effects of the pesticides on the land and water surrounding the plantations as well as the destruction of the rain forest to make room for coffee plantations. The presence of caffeine in over-the-counter medicines, candy, and soft drinks is stressed, especially in the addiction of children. Cherniske also suggests alternatives to caffeine and ways of quitting the habit. While his book is thought-provoking, its rhetoric is somewhat extreme. Not a necessary purchase.?Janet M. I have been addicted to caffeine as long as I can remember. At five I remember being elated when my dad would bring Cokes home for me and my brother to drink. As a ten year old I remember drinking Pepsi, Coke, Mountain Dew, and Dr. Pepper. Most days I would go through 3 or 4 cans of soda each day. When I entered college I switched to Diet Coke because of my fear of calories. Then after my first career job after college I started drinking coffee. Lots of coffee. I managed to stop drinking all caffeine when I was pregnant with both of my children, but after their births I was back on my drug. I am 37, and my husband would comment on the enormous amount of caffeine I was consuming. This made me angry so I started lying about my caffeine consumption. How many cups of coffee did you have today? he would ask. I would say two, but really I had 4 or 5 through out my day. Big cups too. More like mugs. Eventually I started to feel lousy. I was short tempered, nervous, depressed, and I craved sugar all of the time. My asleep was horrible. I couldn't sleep very well, and never felt rested no matter how many hours of sleep I got. I kept looking up online. Is caffeine bad for you? I would ask Google for answers. Most of the articles confused me. Some said yes, some said no, and most said nothing really. It was a gray area it seemed. However, I felt deep down the coffee was killing me so I stopped. I went cold turkey. I don't recommend cold turkey. I had splitting headaches, nausea, and I could not concentrate on anything. Then eventually after three days I started to feel better. I found this book, and purchased it. It confirmed exactly what I thought. I was killing myself with caffeine. I am now one month free of caffeine. I have lost 6 pounds, I sleep better at night, and my depression is gone. If you are curious about caffeine being bad then I suggest you read this book. I am amazed how my depression has lifted. Sometimes I find myself smiling for no reason. I was not draining my coffee cups, my coffee was draining me.

I am very grateful for this book. The information in this book motivated to do what I didn't think I could do, is stop my significant caffeine habit.Every thing else in terms of diet I could say "no" to but not caffeine. For decades. I started in high school and didn't stop.I didn't realize it at the time but around 30 I had adrenal fatigue and it showed. In college I was experiencing crushing afternoon energy crashes.I stopped taking coffee a long time ago but replaced it with green tea. Sure it's more mild but I was still getting effects.Around 48 I started noticing funny things with my blood sugar. I also noticed the stress on my urinary tract. I was getting tired of the severe afternoon crashes that effected how much I got done in a day. Then I learned about adrenal fatigue and how healthy adrenals are critical to a healthy menopause, I knew I had to rebuild my adrenals and give them a break. Part of that break was cutting out caffeine or almost to zero. Now I am 50. I now only have decaf green in the morning...just one or two. Like 5-10 grams of caffeine compared to much more in the past. I am so much happier. I notice if I sleep well I don't even need any caffeine. My energy levels are smoother, my adrenals are getting healthier, I am not stressing my bladder like before, am I am no longer having blood sugar episodes. I am not losing water like before and I know I am having a healthy pre menopause. Caffeine is not good for menopausel women as it effects the hormones. In fact caffeine effects the whole hormonal system. Your life is in your hormones! I wanted a functioning hormone system so I finally gave it up. I am so glad I gave it up and wish I did it much earlier. One thing I really regret is all those years of caffeine depleted my minerals. I didn't know this. I am sure I could have lived a more vibrant healthy life had I let go of caffeine earlier on.I am now feeling a natural energy and it's so much more enjoyable than an artificial one. I use nutrition, ginseng, deep breathing to now enhance my energy than caffeine. My adrenals are probably still healing but it feels so good to just be natural.I am still shocked how society won't see the damage it does. There are doctors who refuse to see the effects. There is no one in my life who is interested in the effects or believes it. So sad. They do not know how they are stressing their health!Natural energy is so much more enjoyable that the artificial energy that just depletes you later.THANK YOU THANK YOU

Caffeine Blues is a book about the rarely discussed dangers of caffeine and the products we most often use to get it into our bodies - namely, Coffee and soda. He details how caffeine causes people to enter into a permanent biochemical state of "fight-or-flight", which has a huge range of negative consequences for the body and the mind. The only negative I can think of for this book is that some of the research is a bit dated. Research into coffee has exploded over the last ten-twenty years and you won't find any of that in this book. Cherniske repeatedly states in the book that scientists are not debating how much benefit a drink like coffee can bring, only "the degree to which it will harm you". As far as I know this is no longer the case. Science has shown there actually are some benefits to the compounds present in coffee.But....but....I feel like the central thesis of the book, that caffeine is a dangerous drug, still holds true, "benefits" of coffee aside. The negative consequences presented in the book are overwhelming. If you're looking for a book to give you the boost you need to quit caffeine, this is it.

This book is now an unread classic. Is that Because it’s so well written? Or Because it is an extended historical and theological argument for the Christian-ness of socialism? Or Because it is so self-consciously American and democratic? Or Because it is Progressive, from the Progressive Era in US history when the remedies for emerging plutocracy were found in antitrust (breaking up Standard Oil), and regulation (Pure Food and Drug Act), and the progressive income tax, and the inheritance tax, and the Federal Reserve to control the banking system? It was only in the 1950s that the Business Right convinced us that all of this (and the New Deal democratic socialism that followed) was wrong, if not un-Christian, Communist, and pro-Soviet. The Reverend Walter Rauschenbusch knew better in 1912. Later-coming Christians should read him and weep.

The book is decent, but there are some serious errors in it. Words are misspelled, butchered would be the better word for it. In some places the letters (because I can't even call them words) are so disjointed I can't make out what the word was supposed to be. In other places, a footnote appears right in the middle of a paragraph. In still other places, there are what looks like skips in the text? I'm not even sure. It's mostly readable, but it's riddled with errors.

A lost Christian Theology (from the Pregressive Era) which makes a lot of sense and IMO needs to be brought back.

This is a classic statement of early 20th century Christian liberal theology, which is still relevant to social and theological issues in the early 21st century. Rauschenbusch provides creative historical perspectives, including the ancient Hebrew prophets, the social teachings of Jesus, the mission of the 1st century church, the character of the medieval church, and early 20th century stresses in American society. This is an exceptional book for illuminating themes in liberal Christian theology and its potential relevance to contemporary challenges.

Rauschenbusch carries you briskly along the thought path of Jesus and the New Testament. His language is crystal clear and refreshing. I have thoroughly enjoy this book, and have followed up with a great deal of Biblical study.

I haven't yet read the entirety of Rauschenbusch's classic, and so will not attempt to review in content what others have done far more adequately. What I will say is that the formatting on this version is AWFUL! I've converted PDF documents to Kindle format with greater accessibility than this version has. Please don't be dumb like me and preview the contents before you decide to buy this book! Upon opening, you will find that every scanned page is broken into two separate pages so that there is far less reading fluidity than desirable and, what is worse, the pagination is a mess if you need to turn to a specific passage quickly. Individual word selection function is disabled, so forget using the dictionary function, let alone highlight or note-taking (unless you're satisfied with highlighting a half page and making a specific comment about a general block of text). And to top it off, whatever version was scanned originally had notes and underlining, so you too can benefit from the marginal (meant in both senses of the word) and sporadic notes and scribbles accompanying the text.Let me be completely clear: I'm a cheap-ass, and if I had received this book for free, I would have given it a solid 4 stars for someone's honest, if misguided, attempt to transfer Christianity and the Social Crisis into electronic format without typing a word or even running it through re-formatting software. Because I paid, however, I feel like a dupe. Check the slightly more expensive and less fancy looking version before buying this one...from what I can tell, it even has a table of contents with chapter and sub-chapter hyperlinks. Well worth the extra four bucks...

This reprint (original Book from 1907) opened my eyes: 100 years ago there were the same problems that the US has today, This tells me humans are very slow learners. Rauschenbusch, the author,in particular points out a total failure of the religions to address this problem. To day,the only one to say anything is the new Pope Francis. If only the actors,I mean politicians would listen! I recommend this book to all Christian Ministers. The author himself was a Baptist Minister.

The pages are sideways. Do not buy it until fixed! Almost impossible to read. Get the new version (...in the 21st century).
