I am using this book in one of my college classes. The book isn't the best out there, but was a good compromise. The author is simple, straight forward, and easy to read. A programming book that doesn't read like stereo instructions. Sometimes, he does leave out little steps that make you want to hit your head on the computer later. Also, I have found a couple of mistakes. Not sure if that is because I have the kindle version or if its apart of the original publication.Even though there are little mistakes and such, the book is soooo much nicer than many of my other programming books. We only take three programming classes for our degree and are just thrown into it. So this is good for someone similar: who knows just enough programming to get you into trouble. (lol)

Google Maps Applications with PHP and Ajax, provides a very easy to understand clear path for getting started with Google Maps. As a PHP developer, (not as much javascript), the book shows an intelligent and useful approach to working with client side scripting and document objects. Great samples throughout the book. I highly recommend this for anyone getting started with Google Maps, regardless of PHP or Ajax...this book is still very useful for any developer.

I haven't had a lot of luck with Apress. And this book is no exception. .kmz format inclusion use in chapter 1 not adequately described.The recommended [...] site is a unusable, can't find Phoenix, Arizona and doesn't explain how to format your lat longs. Code samples are in tar, instead of zip format. Not a show stopper, but another annoyance. And lets face it, there are enough annoyances just learining a new API.

This book has a lot of very practical examples. With this book and the API docs you can make just about anything you like. Good, clear code and comments. Get this book if you want to make Google Maps.

I pay for this book, the last week, but in any place i look the version of the google api, this book is too old, please update the book, o stop selling.

Wow and Kool are the first words that come to mind after reading just the Into and Chapter 1.As a Web Programming Instructor, I am always searching for easy ways to get my students motivated. Page 2 of Chapter 1 shows an XML and XHTML strict - but the code is so straight forward - that you are not in the least intimidated with the strict XHTML. To find something students can relate to that gives a solid example of two abstract things - is great. There is nothing to be intimidated with, the explanations are clear and the web site - give corrections. Each chapter offers a lot fore each level user.Chapter 1 is fun for a wide range of web skills: Web Development, Digital Photographers, Digital Imaging, and more advanced.Chapter 2 - gives the JavaScript, XHTML developer's lots of detail on what is going on in the script. Each exercise builds on the previous one, until by the end of the chapter you have a robust program, you can use immediately.Chapter 3 - adds user input, it begins the discussion of adding to a Database & Ajax. You have a dialog wit the authors of why they did what they did - it's insight to working with a database. The chapters keep getting richer and draw you in. You hate to put it down!Appendix B has a generous 28 page summary of the important API commands, making learning Google Maps API easier.I am adding this to my Reference Book listand it will defiantly be a required reading for Advanced PHP classes.Jil MacMenamin[...]

I am a fairly inexperienced, self taught programmer. I bought the book partly due to the fact that it had "beginning" in the title.The code that is used in the book is not laid out very well. There are parts of the code that they don't explain (such as what apikey.php is) until you go and find out on their website what it means.They are also very inconsistent. Sometimes they used apikey.php and sometimes they didn't. Going through the examples they use the same file names for different examples so you don't know if you are suppose to use the old files from the previous examples or not.Even after I got all of the files that I needed for the tile overlay example it failed on me. This is after spending 3 hours reconstructing the MySQL table (which I didn't care about) because that information wasn't provided with the tile overlay example. After doing all of that work and using their unmodified code (except to change my database logins and api key) the code didn't work. And it failed BEFORE it even got to the MySQL database which means all that work I spent was for naught.The authors suggest that you can email them (and I did a couple times) and they will get back to you. Its been several months and I still haven't heard back from any of them. The questions were about problems using their unmodified code.This book may be good if you have some experience with coding. But on the other hand if that is the case there really isn't any need to buy the book.

This book is very well written. Very concise, clear and focused in the real world problems and solutions. Following the advices and codes of the book, you will can afford most of your google maps projects knowing exactly what to do, and how to do it. I specially find very interesting the chapter dedicated to how to code a map with multitude of markers. Very clarifying.Must have-read book if you are working in a Google Maps project.

We used to check this one out from the library, but it's so good we now own it. All of my children enjoy it, from 9 on down to the little toddler. The illustrations are pretty. There is so much information packed in here without being preachy. My 4 year old especially requests this one to be read aloud. This is a great book to have for a unit study, or just for your own little one's library.

Informative but boring

Good book. A little too wordy for my preschoolers but my 1st grader enjoyed it.

4.5 stars. In typical Jewel Ann style, right off the bat there's a heroine who is bold and sassy with a bit of a reckless or rebellious attitude. Henna Lane doesn't sweat the small stuff after surviving an experience that taught her to live her life to the fullest. She's all about adventure and exploration as well as giving into a good time. Bodhi comes along like an unassuming surfer cowboy with rock band musical tastes and it's like an instant electric zap to Henna. Their exchanges were really cute and flirty with an undertone of sweet. Henna comes on really strong and although Bodhi doesn't seem to mind, he's already noticing there's some stark differences between he and Henna, but welcomes the reprieve from his daily life that she provides for him.I wouldn't say this was an overly angsty story like some of Jewel Ann's other books, although there are some moments that are ulcer inducing. There are moral dilemmas woven throughout the plot that gave me pause as to what was the right thing to do. That was already enough to give me some reader anxiety about where this story was going to go and when Henna or Bodhi would make the wrong decisions. But is it wrong when it's born out of love for another person? Henna, for all of her vibrant youthfulness, is in fact young, but there are moments when her maturity speaks volumes over her actual age. As for Bodhi, he is mature, but he's also very burdened by a past that he can't let go of because it affects him in the present. My heart squeezed hard for him and what he was dealing with. As humans, it's impossible to make the right decision the first time every time. But what matters is righting the wrongs afterwards and learning the lesson to be a better person to avoid such costly mistakes again.I really loved Bodhi and Henna’s relationship although I was a little slower than them to catch up with their intense level of chemistry, it was like a jump off the diving board into the abyss with no hope of return when read from Henna's POV. I adored Bodhi, he's the tender hearted conflicted hero whose personal wants war with his responsibilities. Yet he can't help but want what Henna has to offer. There's a sensitive issue towards the end that really highlighted how people have differing opinions on what is the right thing to do and puts relationships to the test, because ultimately, it is selfish on each party's behalf, and that a person in a position with very little choices still wants to make their own final choice. I appreciated how this section was portrayed and my favorite part was everything that came afterward. There was no way I could have predicted how this story was going to go based on the blurb so the surprises revealed kept me engrossed and the character journey was inspiring.

Timing is everything. When Henna meets Bodhi their timing is all off. Their random ride share at Coachella has Henna instantly smitten and Bodhi giving in to his curiosity about this girl. Concerts don't last forever and they go their separate ways.Starting her senior year of high school at age 19 due to an extended recovery from a life changing accident, Henna is resigned to just get the year over with and graduate, until she meets the new guidance counselor. Timing is everything.I wasn't sure I was going to like Henna's character. She seemed like a flippant pothead at first, lol, but the more I learned about her the more I liked her. She's a free spirit who leads with her heart more than her head, but it works for her. Bodhi was a character I was immediately drawn to because he was broken, broken by the results of his own actions and choices, and he was living with the repercussions of that every single day. Their love is intense and pure and soul deep, but timing is everything. The supporting characters were all pivotal and the moral choices and dilemmas involved made me pause and really think about the situations at hand. This had more angst than I anticipated (fist pump) and my eyes leaked more than once. I loved it.

Jewel E Ann gave me three five star books last year and I was really looking foward to reading this one. I must admit I did find the first half hard going and I had that "meh " feeling throughout, however the last fifty percent really kept my attention and prevented that DNF. I am glad I persevered and finished but I have to be honest and say if it wasn't Jewel E Ann I probably would have given up.I would have loved to have learned more about what happened to Henna to make her the way she was, her highs and lows after her accident, I feel this may have ingratiated her more to me in the beginning as I just couldn't connect to her in the beginning. The insta-love didn't convince me at all unfortunately, however, I was championing this couple by the end.So while this wasn't a winner, winner I still enjoyed it at the end. Jewel E Ann tackles some hard subjects that make you think and loved the honesty with which they were dealt. I will say I seem to be in the minority and this may work for you, many of my friends have loved it.“Love is not a rational emotion. It jumps out of planes and dives off cliffs. It leaves a permanent mark on everything it touches. I can do the right thing or I can love you, but I can’t do both.”
