Though I'm a Montreal Canadiens fan, I have to admit that I always had a bit of a soft spot for the North Stars; their ability to battle against the odds and of course that amazing Stanley Cup run of 1991.Our author gives us some insight into the early beginnings of the franchise - there is a lot of information on Wren Blair, Lou Nanne, and Glen Somnor - and there is a section on fan favourites and other noteworthy players as well as a statistics section at the end of the book. We also learn more about the eventual re-location of the franchise to Dallas by Norm Green; however, Raider paints a rather diplomatic portrayal of the maverick owner.There's also a section on the North Stars heated rivalry with the Chicago Blackhawks. The fact that I didn't want to put the book down tells you all you need to know about the quality of the work done by Adam Raider.

When the National Hockey League doubled in size from six teams to 12 in 1967, one of the brand new franchises was the Minnesota North Stars. It was fitting that the state get a professional hockey team as the sport had flourished for many years at the youth, high school, college and minor league levels. Now there would an NHL franchise to call Minnesota home.The history of the franchise from its beginnings in that 1967-68 season up to April 15, 1993 when it played its last game before moving to Dallas is thoroughly covered in this complete book by Adam Raider. Just about anything a reader would want to know about the team during the 26-year time frame in Bloomington, Minnesota is covered.If the reader wants to learn about the best players in franchise history such as Neal Broten, Mike Modano (while his best years were in Dallas, his first three seasons were in Minnesota), Dino Ciccarelli, or Bill Goldsworthy, there are bios on these players that take up a couple pages each. If instead the reader is more interested in some of the players who made an impact on the franchise, but wasn’t a superstar – players like Curt Giles, Gilles Meloche, Danny Grant or Basil McRae – they are covered here as well. There is also a “best of the rest” section in which fifty other players are given a paragraph or two describing their time in Minnesota. Front office personnel, the team’s only radio announcer are also given significant space in the book. This publication brought back many fond memories of my childhood and young adult life as a North Stars fan.The book isn’t just about the players, however. It begins with a chronological narrative of the team’s history in Minnesota, from the approval by the NHL’s Board of Directors to the shuttering of Met Center in 1993. Some of the more controversial topics such as why Norm Green moved the team and what terms were really approved between the Gund brothers and the new owners in 1990 are covered and researched well. It is important to note that these are written in a fair and unbiased method. The last chapter is an excellent reference site for team records, statistics and highlights from each of the twenty-six years of Minnesota North Stars hockey. If the reader was a fan of the team, it is a book he or she must add to the home library.I wish to thank Mr. Raider and University of Nebraska Press for providing a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Pamela Howard is a practising scenographer and theatre director, specializing in music theatre and music events. She is Professor Emeritus at the University of the Arts London (Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design) and a frequent guest at universities and colleges all over the world. This is a great book written by a wonderful artist.

An exciting and stimulating book that will make every serious theatre artist think, and think hard. This book will be used as a teaching tool in advanced courses and should be welcomed as a touchstone for discussions amongst serious directors and designers. Maybe it's not at quite the same level as The Dramatic Imagination or The Empty Space, but it's surely in the same category of seminal works that will exert a positive influence for years to come. I can't wait to use its insights and methodologies as I begin the creative process for my next production.

I found it to be an eye opening book my dream won't wait for me so why should I wait on it

This book is an eye-opener, a brilliant and utterly fresh approach to the art of theatre design. Pamela Howard leads the reader through the revolution in stage visualization that has taken us from decoration and backdrop to the astonishing complexities (and, more important, the visionary minimalism)of theatre at its highest levels of achievement in the 20th century. I can think of no better introduction for a beginning designer to the limitless possibilities of her or his medium. And I believe even the most accomplished experts in the field will find original and provocative challenges to conventional wisdom here. Best of all, the book is written as an intensely-felt personal statement, based on wide world experience of working with the great theatre practitioners of our time. And it's written with a directness and clarity worthy of a great stage design.

I have used the book only for research purposes, and I have to say, its scope is narrow and fails to credit the history of its subject. A book on scenography that contains only a cursory comment on Josef Svoboda seems a bit unsupported to me. As far as a very general look at the ideas of scenography it is mediocre at best. When defining an inherently undefinable term, it seems only appropriate to describe some the individuals which have coined the term, Howard fails to do this, and I feel the book suffers because of it.

First time I stayed at a resort, then all the other times I would stay with either Reggae connected family or stay at m'driver's' house.I have met most of the people in this book.Dr. Dread's documentation of the lives of these great people is Spot-on!Hey Dread, I know I musta met you. Im a Jamaican music fiend, have read lots of different books about it. I had high hopes for this one but its just not that interesting. Dr Dread comes off as kinda a jerk and just a guy looking to make a living off reggae music. Nothing earth shattering or all that informative in his exploits in the JA music world. Look up Family Mans or Lee Perrys book if you want a great info packed read.

I enjoyed this book. Dr. Dread has traveled along roads that interest me and might interest you if you are into reggae, the music business, and exotic travel. His unique position as a reggae producer allowed him an insight and perspective that few have had on the Jamaican culture, its artists and the especially twisty reggae music industry. Fortunately he has chosen to share it with us. Gregory Isaacs, Bunny Wailer, and more musicians are portrayed in a not always flattering but always loving light.
