Mostly recipes. Not much on how the diet works or how to get started.
Not bad
I received an ARC copy from the author and am reviewing this independently.I've been trying Ketogenic recipes off and on the for the last six months or so, and was immediately impressed with the recipes here because they were easy to follow. The instructions for the four recipes I tried were concise, the ingredient's list was accurate, the times were correct, and the dishes turned out mouth watering in each case.Before I tell you about the recipes, let me say a couple of things about the book itself. If you are a beginning to Ketogenic diets, this book will answer a lot of your questions. It will also help you plan meals, help you decide what to jetison out of your pantry, make your shopping list, and clear your cupboards out. Remember that in Keto diets, a very small percentage of your food will be carbs and sugars, so you will be concentrating on fats and proteins, which is pretty much opposite of what you may be doing now. The book has chapters with foods to eat and foods to avoid, grocery list help, and solid explanations of what foods are ok and which aren't.I tried the following four recipes - and I chose these four based on the ingredients listing with each. I had most of the items already available, which meant I could spend the day cooking and not running off to the store to try and find unrefined coconut oil. :-)Rosemary Chicken Salad with Herb Balsamic Vinaigrette. I love chicken so you'll see that's a theme in both my cooking and my eating. In this case, I've made Rosemary Chicken Salad in the past, although not following ketogenic rules, so this was the first I chose. Unfortunately there was a typo and the last ingredient in this recipe has dropped off the page, apparently never to be found again. Now normally, I would have been concerned but because it was me, I decided to go through the recipe anyway and I made a substitution with parsley for the missing ingredient. And it turned out well, and I still don't know what that last item should have been. But it didn't matter. The salad was delicious!Chicken and Blueberry Salad was next. I told you I was a chicken lover. Believe me there are other things in this cookbook, it just happened that I also like Blueberries, so this appealed to me. This is an incredibly easy salad to make. You cook the chicken, put the salad ingredients in a large bowl, mix the chicken in, divide into two bowls, and viola! And the blueberries are so good in a salad too!Bacon and Egg Fat Bombs were next. And yes, the title of these sort of turned me off, until I remembered you'll be eating fats and proteins in this diet all the time, so why not. I'm also nuts about eggs (something about them coming out of a chicken, I guess). These were just plain good. The only real cooking to them was to bake the bacon until browned and to hard boil the eggs. After that you ended up basically with egg balls that were rolled in crumbled bacon and what was really great is that you can store them in the fridge for up to a week. :-)The last one I tried was totally self serving. Vanilla Bean Cupcakes. These required a trip to Trader Joe's to get everything I needed, but that wasn't a bad thing. These cupcakes are easy to make and the recipe is easier to follow than my normal vanilla cupcake recipe. And they have Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting. Try saying no to that.In closing, I'll say a couple of things about the cookbook. It should have more pictures, but I totally get that adding as many pictures as you would need to cover all the recipes would make the book quite large. So I'll forgive them this, mainly because these recipes are basic. You aren't building a masterpiece where you need a picture to follow. Believe me, these are easy to follow without any pictures at all. And there ARE pictures, but not at each individual recipe page.This book contains just about everything I would think of cooking - snacks, sweets (just not the kind loaded with sugar), main courses (herb chicken and a beef casserole that looks really good), breakfasts, lunches, desserts, biscotti, flans, and pretty much everything else I could think of. The other big added value in this book is the meal plan. A lot of people fail at this type of diet because they lose sight of what they'll make for dinner (or breakfast or lunch) throughout the week. I took a good hard look at the meal plan in this book and it covers enough days, 30!! Plus it doesn't give you the same things to eat over and over again. If you follow it, you'll have variety in your diet every day and will still be following the ketogenic diet.There are a few typos, like the missing ingredients, but they are minor in my opinion. Minor mainly because I substituted parsley in one case (and I'm pretty sure that is what it was) and it turned out fine. And if you can't figure out a missing letter in a simple word, then maybe you need to use a picture book.I hesitated to give this a five star rating, mainly because I only tried four recipes so far, PLUS it really needs pictures, however I'm going to give Geoff Ramsay the five stars anyway. A lot of work went into this and despite needing more pictures, as easy as my four recipes were to make, he deserves the extra stars. If a Keto diet is something you want to try, I don't believe you could go wrong with starting out with this cookbook.
I found this book to get right to the issues of explaining what this diet is all about, very detailed about what to eat and why. Approximately 3/4 of the book is recipes and meal planning, which is a good thing, because without that I would probably not know how to eat properly without getting bored and quitting. To be true to this diet it will be a bit restrictive from what I am used to eating, even though I try to eat healthy now. So that is where the recipes will help to keep on track. I did have some questions like how do I measure the number of ketones in my body, but I can research that I guess. I am of the baby boomer age where I am finding that the belly fat is just gaining on me and it seems that I have been only able to go one step forward and two steps backwards. I was not aware of this diet and will certainly give it a try. I have not had the chance yet to try the recipes but they actually sound good and am looking forward to tying a good many of them. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review.
This cookbook has to be one of the most informative cookbooks about Keto that I have found. The recipes look good and I can not wait to try them. The introduction chapters really helped me to understand what Keto is and how to go about beginning my Keto journey.
I’m trying to change my diet into a ketogenic one and this book give great advice in how to do the transition and the recipes are easy and very tasteful. We are what we eat! A very helpful book to eat and stay healthy .
