This book by Peter Andreas looks at the constant undercurrent of an underground economy in America, and how in many ways, this nation was built on that very thing. In short, people don't like being told what they can and can't buy, and they don't like having to pay endless taxes for a government that they feel is largely out of their reach. I originally purchased "Smuggler Nation" as part of the research for my historical fiction novel, "The Smuggler's Gambit", which is set in 1765 right around the time the Sugar Act and Stamp Act first went into effect. It was during that period in American history when the seeds of Revolution were being planted and frustration with the Crown began to foment."Smuggler Nation" doesn't stop its expose at the colonial era, of course, so I ended up learning so much more from it than I ever expected. It follows the smugglers (and the money) all the way through to modern times. I've still only scratched the surface of reading this hefty volume, but am glad to have it as a useful addition to my reference shelf.

Dense with information - better to read one chapter at a time so you can absorb the material. While this book is not necessarily political (unless you are allergic to facts), you'll learn that a lot of the old money families in this country got their first money from various kinds of illicit activity (not news really, but this gives you a good overview). Please note in the first chapter who the original members of the Boston Tea Party really were. Ironic. You'll also learn a lot about prohibition and why and how pot became illegal, how money was made off of wars and how smuggling aided birth control. And don't forget America's original sin - slavery. I highly recommend this book.

I found the history so interesting and challenging I decided to lead a four week session OLLI class to help others understand and discuss this version of American history. Peter Andreas busted my high school version of American history. It's not about patriots and freedom , it's about evading tariffs and accumulating personal wealth. Smuggling has played a key role from out nation's birth to today. Andreas writes clearly and succinctly and transforms my understanding of the American Revolution, the Civil War and Manifest Destiny. Hint: All three relied on smuggling. Read this entertaining, readable history of our country

And regardless of which regime is in place, smuggling will always be an integral part of the underground economy.The author offers no solutions to the smuggling trade, which is by design since this is meant to be informative.Also, the writer shows that the growth of law enforcement has grown exponentially as a result of smuggling and the rise of the law-enforcement industrial complex.Incentives matter as the saying goes; for every type of demand, there is someone who willing to supply it whether that commodity is legal or illegal.For those who like the truth about American history, this is an excellent source.

I found this book to be very informative, awakening my mind both to the more truthful history of my country and to the consequences of trying to legislate morality. The more laws we pass, the more people will find ways to circumvent them as is clearly shown by today's issues along the Mexican-American border. It has been going on for centuries and will continue so as long as people refuse to learn from history.

Excellent description of how the real USA was formed and later expanded to what we have today. It is very detrimental to the conversations and controversies that we have in the USA about immigration and drugs fail to take into account our, American, entire history and formation as described in this book. Unfortunately we Americans choose to forget, rewrite or just ignore lessons from the past as we pour billions into the respective drug and immigration wars that are very similar to past failures. Yet we still choose to repeat the past? Doing the same thing over and over again is the definition of insanity.

I started reading this after finishing Atkinson's "The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945" . I wanted to balance my reading on the European Theater of WWII with the Pacific.Toll is a good writer. His style is similar to Atkinson's in that in includes extra details that add perspective. For example, a description of the Japanese planes flying so low over Honolulu, that the Americans on the ground saw the pilots faces covered by "their cats eye flying goggles".Toll does a fairly good job at keeping the narrative level at 10,000 feet. Modern war involves men, machines, doctrine, politics and strategy. Toll's story dips into all of these, but never too deeply. Politics and some doctrine are mainly through the focus of President Roosevelt and the Hirohito (the Japanese emperor). Mahan's contribution to the footings of the combatants doctrine and strategy is emphasized. The compare and contrast between American and Japanese warfighting was instructive. I would have appreciated a deep dive into the strengths and weaknesses of the American Navy's pre-war organization. There seemed to be more of an emphasis on the Japanese weaknesses . The thumbnail description of the Japanese A6M Zero was particularly good for aircraft technology. Naval vessels and evolving marine technology get less attention. Strategy comes later with the rise of Halsey, Spruance, and Nimitz vs. Yamamoto and Nugamo.If I find fault with this book, it's that it does not cover the submarine campaign at all. There are a few scant references to submarine reconnaissance. There are also a few oblique references to the notorious 'Torpedo Problem' that plagued the fleet at the beginning of the war. However, compared to the carrier actions, there is nothing on the beginning of the submarine actions against the Japanese by boats based out of Australia and Hawaii. In addition, Japanese submarine campaign has never been documented well, at least not in English language publications. Its not documented here either.This book was very readable. It's a good beginner to intermediate introduction to the beginning of the naval war in the Pacific. This book is part of a trilogy. This is the first book. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series "The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands, 1942-1944". The third book in the series is supposed to be published in 2018.Readers of this book might find reading books like Toland's "The Rising Sun: The Decline & Fall of the Japanese Empire, 1936-45" likewise interesting. Although, that book is dryer than this one. "Silent Victory: The U.S. Submarine War Against Japan" may be helpful in making up for lack of coverage of the submarine campaign.

Pacific Crucible, the War at Sea 1941-1942 is the first volume of a three-book series by Ian W. Toll. This review covers Pacific Crucible and The Conquering Tide, the second volume in the series. I have not read the third volume, The Fleet at Flood Tide.Ian W. Toll is a gifted writer. He manages to plug in interesting details, gluing the reader to the page. While most of these tidbits are not of immense importance, they are exactly what makes reading history fascinating. Mr. Toll moves a story along at speed, avoiding wording and phrasing leading to boredom. Pacific Crucible and The Conquering Tide are appealing as fact based books and as compelling stories.Pacific Crucible begins at Pearl Harbor and explains Japanese decision making behind the raid. The author points out how the attack impacted the Japanese command structure, a detail often omitted in other histories. Ian Toll carefully points out that the main targets of Yamamoto’s attack were the American aircraft carriers, none of which were in port. He also describes the main Japanese offensive moves into Southeast Asia, which secured the oil and other military necessities for Japan. All this is done in a fast moving style that leaves the reader anticipating the next sentence.The author is even handed in his evaluation of the leaders on both sides. Yamamoto’s attack plan was good, but far from perfect. The American military leaders General Short and Admiral Kimmel were unjustly charged with dereliction of duty in the defense of Pearl Harbor, even though they certainly made mistakes. Admiral King is evaluated well and his faults are disclosed along with his ability to lead the Navy in a tough time. All the leaders Mr. Toll discusses, Japanese and American, are approached with respect as well as an opened eyed realism.The Conquering Tide tells the story of the Pacific War after Guadalcanal and details how the Japanese were defeated by American ingenuity, bravery, and industrial power. It is clear that the Japanese were hampered by pre-set conclusions concerning how the war would be fought and how the Americans would fail in the face of the spiritual superiority of their enemies. The Japanese leadership was stunned by the speed of the American advance across the Pacific, and the power of the Pacific Fleet by the end of 1943. Ian Toll tells us of the many false assumptions made by Japan and the helplessness felt by the population as their leaders became oppressive and outright stupid in their handling of the people during the war.Like any author telling any story Ian Toll has his failings. All major battles are covered, most not in deep detail; however, some events, such as the first few voyages of the Wahoo, are reported in extreme detail. In other cases, Mr. Toll fails to adequately discuss items that were important to the Pacific theater of war. The horrible failure of Admiral King to adopt the convoy system at the outset of war, and its costs, are not well explained and lost to the reader. The story of American torpedo failures is split up and difficult to follow.In this old warrior’s opinion, the author is too soft on some of the personalities he reviews. MacArthur is one example. He changed War Plan Orange and adopted junk in its place, and his superiors in Washington allowed it. Why? After the outright debacle following Pearl Harbor and the complete destruction of US air power in the Philippines, with consequences at least as bad as Pearl Harbor, he stayed in command. Why? Mr. Toll does complain about MacArthur, but he does not tell us he was incompetent. In fact, he more or less defends MacArthur’s leadership. It is the same with several other leaders. Mr. Toll gives them the benefit of the doubt too often.I enjoyed both books and highly recommend them for anyone interested in World War II in the Pacific

My son and I read this book together over the course of a month before bedtime. I really enjoy the way the author mixes a historical figure like Al Capone with the fictional characters on Alcatraz island. Meaning much of this book is fiction with a sprinkling of reality. The story does provide tremendous insight into how life was like for the families that lived on Alcatraz island. These are the families of the prison guards and other support staff including the warden. Kids that grew up just outside the prison walls and spent their days in school in San Francisco and their evenings, weekends, and summers on Alcatraz island playing sports, and just being kids. It's not just fun and games all the time. The main character faces plenty of challenges with his sister, friends, girls, and of course Al Capone.

I am so glad I bought this book. I have already given several copies of the first book to teacher friends to use as outloud reading to their junior high classes. I am now retired after 43 years of teaching, but one thing that never changes is kids loving a book read to them. These books not only give them insight into the 1930's, but a glipse at the predjudice and insensitivity of dealing with special needs children.This book also has a wonderful way of showing forgiveness within a "family". The message that everyone makes mistakes, but forgiveness is the glue that keeps you together. What a great story.

My 7th grade students love this book! We first read Al Capone Does My Shirts and my students, who are reluctant readers, were engaged and completely invested in this book. Which is a huge feat for me to find a book that all my students enjoy and want to read. After the first Al Capone... book we immediately started reading the sequel, Al Capone Shines My Shoes, at the students request.As much as they loved the first book, they enjoy this book even more! It has a new villain in Darby Trixle, Natalie is at Ester P. Marinoff, and Moose actually has contact with Al Capone! They don't want to stop reading!As a teacher, I like any book that engages students but I find myself enjoying this book with the students. Even after the third time I've read it each day.While it is set in 1935, the language and situation the children on the island go through are relatable to today's students. Gennifer Choldenko touches on a lot of relevant issues such as autism, friendship, right/wrong, and forgiveness. Choldenko uses a lot of figurative language, especially similes that make the students (and myself) laugh out loud.This is a fun book and a great read for all students. Especially if you have a reluctant or non-reader. I highly recommend it!

My fifth and fourth grade students love these books!

We listened to the first audio book, "Al Capone does my Shirts" when we checked it out from the Library. As a family, we listened during a road trip to New Jersey. The story was amazing and wonderful. One of our sons has Autism and is non-verbal. He loved the story and wanted to listen to the audio book again and again. Needless to say, when the sequel was written, we had to purchase it. On another road trip to New Jersey, we listened to all of the disks. All three of my children were glued to the radio listening to what happened to Moose, Natalie, and the rest of the kids. It was better than T.V.! I think I saw a tear or two. You will enjoy this book, and you must read/listen to the first one too.

I love every single installment in this series, simply because I adore the characters and I want to continue to know what happens to them as their lives progress.

I did a book study with my 4th grade class using this book and they kids love the story.

I got this for my younger cousin as a Christmas present, he was super excited and began reading right away. A fun series for any kid who is interested in American history!

Passed my Foundation Exam today! This book was a major factor (~80%) in preparing me for the exam. Like many others studying for the exam, I wanted to make sure that I had the most effective resources and tools to aid me in passing the exam. Unfortunately, there just aren't many high quality study aids on the market for the TOGAF exam, but this book definitely fills the gap. I highly recommend using it.One thing I should mention to those new to TOGAF, at first the material may seem confusing, boring, and overly complex. Initially, I found myself re-reading paragraphs multiple times just trying to make sense of a concept, and how it relates to other concepts. Additionally, because the book does not provide a visible real world example of TOGAF structures (i.e. Enterprise Continuum, Architecture Vision document, Governance Log, etc..) and is terminology-dense, it may take a bit longer to learn some concepts. Be patient, things will become clear as you progress through the book.For the next edition of this book, I think it would be useful to have sample website that contains examples of all the major TOGAF documents used to build a simple Java Pet Store Demo application (or something similar). This would provide both students and practitioners with an actual implementation of a technology architected with TOGAF.Here's a quick Q & A for those interested:Q. What test simulator or book has best prepared me for the official exam?A. The two exams provided at the end of the official TOGAF 9 Study Guide - 3rd edition best prepared me for the official exam. Other exam questions/simulators* I used seemed like a derivative of the TOGAF 9 Study Guide questions, but with a different style of writing, however, they were a good resource for additional free practice questions.Q. How difficult is the exam?A. In my opinion, on a scale of 1 to 10, the exam difficulty is between 7.0 and 8.0. The exam is not difficult in a computational or analytical sense, but more in terms of applying conceptual knowledge based on a large set of framework-specific terms, structures and processes. For reference, I scored a 77 (31/40) on my first attempt.Q. How long did you study before taking the exam?A. Off and on for about 3 months. The first month I took the Udemy class (Become an Enterprise Architect with TOGAF 9.1 Part 1)** and that helped give me a broad overview of TOGAF. Then I read each chapter in the TOGAF 9 Study Guide, took notes, and did the questions at the end of the chapter. After I finished the book, I did the practice exams - over and over again until I was scoring in the 90s. (I used an excel spreadsheet to track my progress.) In the last month, I re-read the TOGAF 9 Study Guide, and actually understood much more of the book than I did during the first read through.One thing I found EXTREMELY helpful in the last few weeks was watching the Orbus TOGAF Distilled video playlist***. They did an amazing job of concisely summarizing the TOGAF ADM. I must have watched the entire playlist at least 5+ times. I also kept a printed copy of the Orbus TOGAF 9.1 in Pictures Guide on my desk and regularly reviewed it. ****For reference, here are my practice exam scores:FSG Exam 1: 75,77.5,97.5,97.5,97.5,97.5FSG Exam 2: 90,92.5,95,100,97.5Udayan Exam 1: 47.5,77.5,80,85,97.5,95,87.5Udayan Exam 2: 85,97.5,97.5,92.5,95Best of luck on to all.NOTE: If your Prometric testing center is not on v3.1.3.1 of the TCFlow software, your test may not load. If you see an error like: '...your test in not available yet, you may need to reboot this workstation' – then have the test administrator verify they are running v3.1.3.1. The tutorial will load, but the exam may not. I waited for over 3 hours as a Prometric tech had to remote upgrade from v2.8.4.2 to v2.8.17.1 to v3.1.3.1. Definitely not how I expected my testing experience to go, but at the end of the day - mission accomplished :-)[...][...][...][...]

I recently passed the TOGAF part 2 and used this book for the sample questions in Appendix A and B. The majority (95%) of this book is a rehash of the TOGAF Spec, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I don't think it's a good use of ink as a study guide. The sample exam questions in Appendix A and B (and sample exam answers in Appendix C) are very useful in preparing for the actual example. However, there are only 12 sample exam questions, which isn't enough - especially when preparing for a challenging and expensive exam.In the next edition of this book, I suggest that Exercise questions at the end of each chapter be updated to exam-like scenario questions relevant to the chapter. Additionally, it would be nice to have a chapter dedicated to exam strategies with an emphasis on how to think like a TOGAF practitioner.If you're studying for TOGAF Part 2, then you need to understand how to attack the scenario question.(Disclaimer: I took a TOGAF Part 2 course on UDemy prior to buying this book which taught me the strategy to efficiently answer the scenario questions).In brief:Step 1: Eliminate the noise - any non-relevant info about the company, location, staff, vision, etc.. needs to be crossed out / ignored. This will allow you to focus on relevant details.Step 2: Understand the relevant details in the context of the TOGAF spec, and not necessarily in real-world experience you may personally have. In particular, try to first identify what ADM phase the scenario may be eluding to.Step 3: Familiarize yourself with the location of information in the TOGAF Spec - this is a HUGE time saver. For example, if a question is referring to updating the Architecture Principles for company XYZ to address some stakeholder concern, then you need to immediately know where to look in the TOGAF spec to research Architecture Principles [TOGAF 9.1 > Part III: ADM Guidelines & Techniques > Architecture Principles].Yes, there's 7 sections/parts and 52 chapters, but it only takes a little practice to know exactly where to look since the section/parts are logically organized.Step 4: Eliminate the Distracter first. I must have practiced this strategy more than any other as it's super important that you narrow the answers down to at least 50/50, where one answer has a 5-point value, and the other answer has a 3-point value.Remember, to pass the exam you only need 24/40 points. There are ONLY 8 questions. So if you can narrow each answer set down to 50/50 (5-point / 3-point), then you'll pass - it's that simple. However, as I mentioned it's really important to eliminate the 0-point (Distracter) answer, and also the 1-point answer.Step 5: Practice being patient and detailed-oriented, then build up speed. At first, the scenario questions seem information dense and complex, and the answers all seem very similar. This is because it takes a bit of practice to efficiently dissect the scenario and parse out relevant details. The same is true for the answers. At first all the answers may seem 'feasible' to the untrained practitioner. Fortunately, there's a Distracter answer with each answer set, which really helps narrow down the options. So, be patient when you first start practicing, it make take you 30 mins to answer one scenario question; and by answer, I mean to make a chart like what's shown in Appendix C (Topic, Scenario, Subjects, Rationale, Most Correct - Distracter). You likely won't need to make this chart for the actual exam, but starting off, it's important to rank and justify your answers. This helps you to think like a TOGAF practitioner.Best of luck!
